Bucks acquire Maggette from Golden State

06/22/2010 - Milwaukee, WI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Milwaukee Bucks have acquired forward Corey Maggette from the Golden State Warriors for guard Charlie Bell and center Dan Gadzuric.

The Bucks also picked up the 44th selection in the 2010 draft as part of the exchange. The NBA Draft is set for Thursday, June 24.

Maggette is a veteran of 11 NBA seasons and recently completed his second year with the Warriors by averaging 19.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 70 games, 49 of those starts.

The Duke product shot 51.6 percent from the field and averaged 29.7 minutes per game. The 6-foot-6 former first-round draft pick was one of five NBA players to average double figures in scoring, shoot 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line in 2009-10. His 7.9 free throw attempts per game ranked seventh in the NBA. He's reportedly owed close to $31 million over the next three years.

In 710 career contests, including 432 starts, the 30-year-old Maggette has posted 16.6 points per game, 5.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists while shooting 45.8 percent from the floor. Maggette spent his first pro season with Orlando before playing the next eight years for the Clippers.

"Corey has been a consistent scorer throughout his career," said Milwaukee general manager John Hammond. "He shoots a solid percentage from the field and has shown the ability to get to the free throw line. We're looking forward to having him in a Bucks uniform."

Bell completed his fifth season with the Bucks this past year, posting 6.5 points, 1.5 assists and 1.9 rebounds over 22.7 minutes per game. He shot 36.5 percent from three-point range on 73 long distance makes in 71 games (39 starts).

The 6-foot-3, 31-year-old has participated in 357 career NBA contests, making 137 starts and averaging 8.9 points, 2.4 assists and 2.2 boards while shooting 36.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Michigan State product appeared in seven games split between Dallas and Phoenix his rookie year before spending the next three years playing overseas.

Gadzuric has played through a plague of injuries since inking a six-year, $36 million contract in 2005. The deal concludes next season when he is due $7.2 million. He was limited to 32 games last season and averaged 2.8 points and 2.9 rebounds.

The 6-foot-11 product of UCLA garnered the extension after averaging 7.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game in starting 81 games during the 2004-05 season. Those remain his career-best efforts in scoring and rebounding, having spent his entire eight-year pro tenure in Milwaukee.

"Charlie and Dan are two high-character veterans who can provide us with some of the intangibles that we need on our squad," said Warriors general manager Larry Riley. "While we certainly wish Corey well and thank him for his outstanding contributions the last two years, this will help alleviate a log- jam that we have at small forward and, more importantly, power forward, where we expect both Brandan Wright and Anthony Randolph to return from injuries and play an increased role on our team next season."

Mayweather picked to beat De La Hoya
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- Golden Boy Oscar De La Hoya and his rival Floyd Mayweather Jr. arrived at the MGM Grand here Wednesday amid the pomp and pandemonium befitting two of the biggest stars in the sport who are about to duke it out for the WBC super welterweight crown this Saturday (Sunday in Manila).

As of Wednesday, MySportsbook.com closed its book with Mayweather a favorite to defeat De La Hoya at -170 (a $100 bet wins $70), while De La Hoya is a +140 underdog (a $100 bet wins $140).

"The crowd was fantastic. Everybody was just too eager to see the two fighters," said ALA manager Michael Aldeguer, who was among those who waited at the lobby together with his ward Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista and AJ Banal.

De La Hoya made his own grand entrance at the hotel lobby at around 12:30 p.m. accompanied by GBP chief executive officer Richard Schaefer and trainer Freddie Roach.

The same group of fans who trooped to see Mayweather also lingered around to get a close look at De La Hoya, who has been secretly working out at a Las Vegas gym for days after arriving from his main training camp in Puerto Rico.

The golden boy then took part in a closed-door afternoon workout with Bautista and Banal. The two, along with Aldeguer and wife Christine, as well as an HBO crew were the only ones allowed inside the gym.

De La Hoya and Mayweather take part in today's final press conference before the official weigh-in this Friday.

Ring Magazine, the acknowledged bible of boxing, reported in its June 2007 issue that 12 out of 20 boxing experts it interviewed have favored Mayweather to defeat De la Hoya, with only 8 favoring the latter.

But Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao said in a recent interview with The Freeman's Emmanuel Villaruel that De La Hoya will win by unanimous decision over Mayweather.

MySportsbook.com: NFL draft - The NFC South


In part two of MySportsbook.com’s draft preview, we’ll take a look at a division that was extremely disappointing last season: the NFC South.  Many “experts” predicted the Panthers to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, of course they could not even make the playoffs in an extremely weak NFC.  The Saints definitely made up for the disappointing seasons of their NFC South brethren by exploding out of no where en route to the NFC Championship game.  For the avid NFL gambler, it is imperative to pay attention to the NFL draft.  Although free agency gets a ton of publicity, the successful franchises build their teams around the draft.

1. New Orleans Saints
Who would have thought this time last year that the Saints would be the favorites to win the NFC South for the 2007 campaign?  New Orleans is loaded with firepower on the offensive side of the ball but with the exodus of Joe Horn they will most likely look to draft a WR on Day 1.  Despite having the NFL’s 3rd ranked pass defense last season, the Saints will most likely upgrade their CB’s with one of their first two picks. Other possibilities for the Saints will be TE and DT.  Because of where they will be selecting (27th), the Saints could go the “best available player” route which could net a LB.

2. Carolina Panthers
Carolina was one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL last season.  With the signing of David Carr, expect the very first quarterback controversy to come out of Carolina if Jake Delhomme doesn’t rebound quickly from an average 2007 season. With veteran safety Mike Minter getting up there in age, they will look to draft a safety on Day 1 but probably not in the first round.  LB is another need with the loss of Chris Draft to go along with Dan Morgan’s concussion problems.  If TE Greg Olsen is still on the board, he might be too good to pass up despite their needs on the defensive side of the ball.

3. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons were another NFC South team to have a disappointing 2007 season.  The Falcons have been plenty busy during the off season with plenty of players coming and going including a new head coach.  The Falcons were able to improve their draft position with the trade of coveted backup QB Matt Schaub.  High on the list of Day 1 needs will be a defensive end to replace Patrick Kerney and a hard hitting safety since Lawyer Milloy is nearing the end of his career.  With an additional 2nd round pick, the Falcons could attempt to trade up to acquire local product WR Calvin Johnson.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Age really caught up to the Bucs last season.  The Bucs still have plenty of household names on defense in Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice and Derrick Brooks but the one thing those three have in common is unfortunately age.  It is imperative for the Bucs to get much younger, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Despite having bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball, WR Calvin Johnson is the most likely pick if he is still available when the Bucs pick at the four spot.  This would suit Bucs’ faithful just fine as Johnson is widely considered the top talent in the draft and it is a position of need for the Bucs.
